Sears Is Closing Its Last Stores in Multiple States, Starting This Month
AFTER THE LATEST ROUND OF CLOSURES, ONLY A DOZEN SEARS STORES WILL BE LEFT.
Department stores certainly haven't had it easy over the years, as they've been forced to adapt to the evolving retail world and, of course, the rise of online shopping. While some managed to stay afloat, Sears has experienced more difficulty than others. According to ScrapeHero, as of March, the retailer had just 18 stores in 13 states—a far cry from its peak of 3,500 Sears and Kmart stores. While the department store chain was able to emerge from bankruptcy in Nov. 2022, per the New York Post, it's now shutting down more stores nationwide. Read on to find out if your local Sears is closing for good.

The last Sears in North Carolina is closing.
After 51 years in business, the Sears located at the Friendly Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, is closing up shop. It's the last remaining Sears store in the state, NBC affiliate WXII 12 News reported.
The store is currently running final sales, with inventory up to 70 percent off. An employee told WXII 12 News that the store is anticipated to close at the end of this month.
CBL Properties, which owns the Friendly Center, told the outlet that the closure "is the first step of an active redevelopment plan."
The company added, "Once plans are finalized, we'll be excited to share more specific details."

Rounding out the list of closures is the Sears Home & Life store in Lafayette, Louisiana. Similar to the other locations, signs announcing the closure were posted in the store windows, the Acadiana Advocate reported.
It's the last Sears store in the state of Louisiana—but it was just opened in 2019, as one of three under the Home & Life brand, according to the Acadiana Advocate.
One Home & Life location in Anchorage, Alaska, already closed, while the other store in Overland Park, Kansas, remains open, according to Google. However, the Acadiana Advocate reported that the Kansas location is also set to close.
Best Life reached out to Transformco, the owner of Sears, for comment on the closures, and will update the story upon hearing back.
Only a dozen Sears stores will be left.
Following the latest round of closures (including Overland Park), Sears will be left with only 12 stores in the U.S.
The Sears in Burbank, California, is listed as "temporarily closed" on Google, but the retailer operates three other stores in the state. It also has three stores in Florida, two stores in Texas, and individual locations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Washington. Sears continues to operate a location in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as well.
